Thanks, Dan. We’ll look into it.
Jazz, obviously people like Pat and Jesse (who we should never confuse with Christians) would not stand up for our freedoms. I’ve always said the sex/nudity/obscenity is just a smoke screen to establish an official religious morality, to make people fragile, isolated, fearful ….
Victims who need Big Brother to protect and control them.
Speaking of victims … tomorrow the U.S. Senate votes on what’s called “the Victims of Porn Bill.” If it passes, if a crazy uses a murder in a novel to kill someone, the victim’s family can sue the writer, the publisher, and the bookstore/library. This surreal unreality would chill all the art down to insane safe. Call/fax your senator.

I’ve a copy of a letter to Bobby Lilly of CAL-ACT from J Ronald Castell, the Sr. V.P. of programming and communications of Blockbuster Video, dated June 20, 1991. In it Castell said Blockbuster Video has not carried X-rated movies since they opened in 1985. He goes on to say the MPAA (who gives films the ratings) told him that NC-17 was the same as sex.
To understand how sleezy this statement is, we’ve to understand the history of NC-17. Film critics and filmmakers pressured MPAA to come up with NC-17 for serious, difficult, controversial films for adults because theaters wouldn’t show, and the newspapers wouldn’t run ads for, films with an X … because the XXX sex films had made the X their own calling card. NC-17 is supposed to be given to films with artistic content (which is why any rating system is dicey).
Castell said most NC-17 films are “blue, skin, porn or adult” under “a cloak of respectability”.
A class assignment … rent a juicy, gory, and/or sleazy R-rated video from Blockbuster Video. Now rent LAST TANG0 IN PARIS, WHORE, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, HENRY & JUNE, TIE ME UP – TIE ME DOWN, THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE & HER LOVER …now compare. It’ll become clear the sex or violence are not the real issue. The real issue is that these films are trying to subvert the established order.
Back to the letter. Castell says national Blockbuster Video “made a decision not to carry those movies when they are rated X, NC-17 or UNRATED …”.

Quite agreed, Frank. We /purposely/ avoided professional actors in that production of /No Tongue/…. While I have a good amount of stage experience, I don’t consider myself a professional by any means. The only one was Dar Ranno, who played the Seeress; she’s rather well-known regionally as an actress. She however, did not have the impediments most pro actors would bring. She is a Buddhist with Native American leanings, and a lovely and generous soul. While she did not “look the part” (that is, she didn’t look like the Seeress as she was in the dream I had on which the play is exactly based), she brought it alive incredibly well. She did \not\ recite the lines, but made them truly hers, as if she were saying them genuinely and spontaneously. I was deeply moved by her powers.

On a similar thread … when I toured, sometimes I needed a local person to be in the performance. The gallery or theater that brings me in usually gets this person for me. And because of the nudity and eroplay, they usually get someone who is in the sex business, thinking that since she is willing to do sex, nudity, etc., she will have no problems with the ritual. But in reality, these are much more likely to freak (sometimes 30 minutes before showtime) than a “straight” person who wants to do it to push beyond her limits, and taboos. The flashpoint of the freakout is the required personal vulnerability. In the sex business, as in acting, they can remain behind a mask/role. For most of my 20+ years in shaman/art, when people used nudity and “sex” as excuses to not do the work, I always felt vulnerability was the real taboo. But only when I started working with porn people, could I pin it down.
The exception to this are the great porn stars like Annie Sprinkle, Veronica Vera, and Nina Hartley who are subversive artists in their own right, using sex as their medium.

Well said. Vulnerability is the issue. I’ve seen people use nudity as a kind of “shield” – e.g., at encounter groups, nude beaches, etc. In this culture we all walk around with a kind of psychological armor which nearly all persons are unable even to consider shedding, though they like to pretend they don’t have any. –Jim

The fact is it is a fairly common practice, if an underground one, for doctors to help their terminally ill or extremely suffering patients to die. It’s my body, my life, my pain, my choice, my right.

Can we get a copy of the supposed law onto here? The basic issue here should be the person’s right to die, to ask someone to assist. I do not believe it should be limited to doctors … but in the present state of things, doctors control the drugs needed for painless death … and in the hospital setting, where most people die, you are in the controlling reality of the doctor’s responsibility. Ideally dying like in Huxley’s novel, ISLAND.
I’ve a friend who is a physical therapist … the kind who establishes a personal relationship with her patients. She had one patient who had been confined to bed for 15 years, breathing on a machine. But this woman was very independent, running a bookkeeping business from her bed.

Then her condition took a nosedive … she was in increasing pain, losing control of her own life, and was in a hospital, not in her home. My friend has made a house call every day for 15 years. The woman had long ago asked my friend to be with her when she made them turn off the life-support when /if that point arrived.
So my friend and the doctor sat in the hospital room after they removed the tube. Nothing happened. Basically, it took several long helpless hours for the body’s poisons to reach the needed level to kill her … during this time, by law, she could be given drugs to remove acute pain, but not enough to induce sleep. In fact, whenever she fell asleep, they had to, by law, wake her up. My friend said it was the hardest, most painful thing my friend has done. Finally, my friend asked the doctor to turn the drug up. He did. This required legal ritual is not humane, ethical or civilized.

BTW, Diane, yes, that’s Mike’s art. Maybe Craig could put some of the prints of my paintings onto GEnie.
Anyway, I just got back from Nevada City where I was on a 4-hour radio show on KVMR 89.5fm, a radical community-supported station. I swear, the 90’s revolution has started in places like Nevada City and Phoenix, AZ.
Anyway, Darrel, the host of the HEARTSPACE show, literally sat back and let me do a thing for four hours. I sang for a total of an hour. Linda and Mike read my stuff … I talk about art, magic, culture subversion, censorship, death, sex … even GEnie! In fact, the group who put on the 100 MONKIES anti-nuclear testing demo in Nevada, may get on-line because of a call-in.
After the show (4am) Darrel, took us on a guided tour of the Miners’ Foundry (on Spring Street) which now houses the station and the community culture center. It is a huge, amazing Disneyland/hippie/dream castle complete with a huge pipe organ and Roman columns!
I like Nevada City itself. It reminds me of Santa Fe, New Mexico of 20 years ago. Great cheap dinner at THE NATIONAL HOTEL, breakfast at MOORE’S CAFÉ, and coffee at THE HERB SHOP. But bring money … it’s a shopping town!

Stan, you raised several interesting points. Pleasure as motivation … on one level, that … in that something is pleasurable it’s usually because it is right … the problems come in when the person sees pleasure as a goal and runs after it. Eroplay is for being within the state of physical pleasure with another.
I think having sexual intercourse outside a committed relationship within the normal context causes confusion. (There are other contexts, such as magical rituals, that this effect doesn’t apply.) This is not because of some moral reason, but for practical reasons. The orgasm within intercourse may set off a bonding pattern in the brain. The casual nature of an affair does not match this bonding pattern … hence, the confusion. By “committed relationship”, I don’t necessarily mean marriage.
Playing is one of the main ways higher mammals learn.
Well, Stavros, one of my chapters of the new book I’m writing is called “CREDIT CARD MORALS” (do wrong now, pay later … or, pay later, do wrong now … always with a high interest rate.) I’ll send it to you.

Actually I’m looking forward to dying in curiosity. I have and have had, a great life … and see dying as a continuation of that.
